Tired of life on the run, two expert thieves and best friends recruit feisty Sam to assist them with one last job, unlike any they've done before.“Wingwomen” is the rare French action movie directed by a woman, Mélanie Laurent, the breakout star of “Inglourious Basterds” turned filmmaker in her native France. Laurent’s seventh feature, a girl-power spectacle, purports to be a naughtier version of “Charlie’s Angels” — its leading three ladies party, smoke and have vigorous libidos — so it’s too bad these spicier elements are muted by the film’s flat tone and derivative style.Laurent also stars as the film’s veteran thief, Carole, a steely, chiseled blonde. Her bestie, and No. 2, is Alex (Adèle Exarchopoulos), an expert sniper and an unabashed flirt whom the older Carole recruited years ago for a diamond heist. Now a seasoned crime team, Carole is the brains, Alex the muscle. The duo eventually gains a third leg with Sam (Manon Bresch), a racecar driver.
There are almost enough moments of low-level fun to be had in Wingwomen, Mélanie Laurent’s easy, breezy attempt to make a French action comedy polished enough to compete with Hollywood counterparts. The sub-genre has become exhausting of late, the sight of a couple quipping while involved in a pop-soundtracked action setpiece starting to border on parody, especially in this year’s atrocious Chris Evans-Ana de Armas disaster Ghosted. But Laurent, to her credit as director, is less interested in how a shootout can work as an aphrodisiac, and more invested in how it would affect a female friendship. And so the first time we see her and BFF, played by Adèle Exarchopoulos, fresh from Passages, they’re bantering about the latter’s lacklustre love life while trying to avoid getting shot at by some fighter drones. It’s certainly more novel than we’re used to, but only superficially, and with some messy editing and perfunctory quips, it’s an opener resting solely on the shoulders of its two leads. The same can be said for most of the film, Laurent and Exarchopoulos doing some strenuous grunt work to make Wingwomen feel as light-footed as it does. They play ride-or-dies who work together for the Godmother (a vampy, underused Isabelle Adjani), who gives them high-risk missions around Europe. But when Carole (Laurent) wants a new life, they find that, surprise of surprises, getting out is a lot harder than getting in.
Tired of living on the run, two expert thieves and best friends (Mélanie Laurent, Adèle Exarchopoulos) enlist the help of feisty Sam (Manon Bresch) for one last job.Alongside her best friend and confidant, Alex (Adèle Exarchopoulos), Carole embarks on a quest to steal an iconic painting. Sounds simple, right? But it’s a heist with a less-than-foolproof plan, and one that requires an ace getaway. Enter Sam (Manon Bresch), a talented race car driver with a dark past. Together, the bickering trio will take on the world — if they don’t kill each other first. Read on to find out everything you need to know about Wingwomen.Wingwomen has been a big draw on Netflix as one of the most-watched movies over the past month, with 34.7 million views since its debut on November The French-language action-comedy was directed by Mélanie Laurent who also stars as Carole, a professional thief desperate for retirement and a life of peace alongside Alex (Adèle Exarchopoulos). However, their ruthless mob boss Marraine (Isabelle Adjani) is not willing to let them go — not even after promising freedom after one last job (plus a relaxing vacation) in Corsica, where they recruited the skilled getaway driver Sam (Manon Bresch).
It all builds to an unexpected ending that delivers on emotion, but might leave you with some questions about how it all plays out.So let's dig into Wingwomen's ending to explain all and, be warned, spoilers follow.Mélanie Laurent, who broke through in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” and has since made a name for herself as a filmmaker, is back in the director’s chair with “Wingwomen,” coming to Netflix Nov. 1.The movie, in which Laurent stars alongside Adèle Exarchopoulos, Manon Bresch and Isabelle Adjani, is a rare breed of action-comedy driven by fearless female characters. Laurent and Exarchopoulos star as high-profile thieves and best friends who decide to retire from their life on the run. They recruit Sam, a young and feisty car racer (Bresch) to assist them with one last job, but quickly clash with their godmother’s will (Adjani).
