The duo must track down an infamous filmmaker and navigate a town of hungry zombies to save the world. Most of the dialogue lands between tedious and awkwardly phrased, but when Dan Aykroyd gets to stop the movie cold to info-dump some amusing ludicrous expositional lore with a straight face, you’ll get the sense that this was why he agreed to this part in the first place.In a film full of cameos that generally feel like a chain of favors with no payoffs, Bruce McCulloch from The Kids in the Hall gets some real laughs as the stern but ineffectual cop dad to one of Carver’s zealous superfans. (His fellow Kid Scott Thompson has less to do in an even-smaller role, but it’s sure good to see them both.

When twelve-year-old Mike and his friend, Karen, go to see a horror movie called Zombie Town, the last thing they expect is for the title characters to come down off the screen and chase them through the theater. And it’s not popcorn these hungry creatures want to chomp on—it’s human brains!Amy and Mike unearth a centuries-old curse when they decide to watch an exclusive film reel. The duo must track down an infamous filmmaker and navigate a town of hungry zombies to save the world.In the small town of Carverville, local love is provided for film director Len Carver (Dan Aykroyd), with the man of horror once generating hit zombie movies, but now lives a reclusive life. However, for this Halloween, Len is emerging from retirement, ready to premiere his latest endeavor, “Zombie Town,” his first offering in 30 years. The locals are excited for the event, including Mike (Marlon Kazadi), a movie theater employee who’s also dealing with adolescent issues, including a crush on classmate Amy (Madi Monroe), while bully Chad (Callan Potter) enjoys making life difficult for the young man. On the night before Halloween, Mike and Amy elect to take an early look at the mystery feature, discovering a strange film canister with an Egyptian symbol on it. Deciding to run the picture, the teens discover its power to transform others into soul-sucking zombies, forcing them to locate Len and try to stop the spread of the undead.

The first half of “Zombie Town” isn’t stunning, but there’s a focus on the basics that creates some interest in the picture. We meet Mike, a nice, honest kid trying to make his way through life, facing colorful locals such as Andy (Scott Thompson), a bike shop owner who won’t let anyone use his facilities without paying. Jenkins (Bruce McCulloch) is a cop who’s not especially sharp. And there’s Richard (Henry Czerny), a theater manager and a Len superfan, eager to view the big movie. There’s a small-town energy to the feature that connects as intended, complicated by the presence of young love, as Mike is unable to share his feelings with Amy, fearful her attention is aimed at Chad. Mystery rises with the ways of Len, who’s retreated from public view, avoiding attention from fans who visit the area looking for their favorite horror filmmaker.Based on an RL Stine novel ZOMBIE TOWN is the story of a young man and his friend who have to try and save their town when the new zombie film from legendary director Len Carver (Dan Akroyd)  turns everyone into brain munching zombies.

Appearing in American theaters in a kind of half-hearted release that back in the day would have resulted in my driving fifty or a hundred miles to see it, ZOMBIE TOWN is a sweet little film that the distributors weren’t sure how to handle. I can kind of understand that since the film is clearly aimed at a family audience however outside of animated films there really isn’t a theatrical market for families. That’s a shame since this is a film that was made with genuine love, even to the point that Chevy Chase actually turns in a good performance.Tweaking things from the book, the characters are in high school and not 12, and things are a bit more adult, this is a nice upgrade from the novel. It is never juvenile, but always family friendly in the best sort of a way with some of the bits being fine for kids and having an edge for adults. What I like is that there is a nice blending of (low key) horror and humor, and while won’t scare the little ones too much it will keep the bigger kids and adults hooked as to what is happening. The only thing working against it is that it is an RL Stine story so you know it can’t get too dark.(If you go in expecting a full on horror film this is going to disappoint you)

As I said above the film was clearly made with love and it bleeds off the screen. You can feel that the community on screen is a real place. It helps that everyone turns in a real performance and doesn’t phone it in. I completely understand why Aykroyd, Chase and the others took part in the film because the result is something other than just a desire just to make money.Amy and Mike unearth a centuries-old curse when they decide to watch an exclusive film reel.
