Muthuvel Pandian is a strict yet empathetic jailer who must stop a gang from trying to rescue their leader from prison.A crime syndicate attempts to free its leaders from prison, but the warden of the jail Muthuvel Pandian (Rajnikanth) foils the efforts by putting on a show for the remaining criminals.“Jailer” simultaneously is and isn’t a typical Rajinikanth vehicle. It’s more self-conscious and more committed than some of his other recent vehicles, as far as reconciling the tonal whiplash banked into the Indian cinema’s kitchen sink, mass-audience-minded masala style. The makers of “Jailer” toggle between emotional registers with confidence and alarming frequency, like whenever Muthu helps Rithvik film a gardening program for his YouTube channel, and then resumes his bloody feud with Varman. In a musical montage that only makes sense after a long-delayed plot twist, Muthu and Rithvik bask in each other’s company while an acoustic guitar plays and a singer paints a sunny picture of a man who, in Rithvik, also sees “my leader ... my son.” Meanwhile, Arjun tortures one of Varman’s men, and also orders a fellow cop to not give water to his blood-soaked victim. The acoustic guitarist never takes a break.

Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth's upcoming movie Jailer is one of the most-awaited movies of 2023. The release will kick off a season of blockbusters as many big-star movies are waiting to arrive in cinemas in the following weeks. Written and directed by Nelson, a lot is riding on the movie's success. Jailer is a very important movie in Nelson's career. The director became a force to reckon with in the Tamil film industry with back-to-back hits like Kolamaavu Kokila and Doctor. However, his career took a hit when Beast, starring Thalapathy Vijay, garnered poor reviews from audiences and critics alike. However, thanks to Vijay's superstardom, Beast managed to sail through negative reactions and became a profitable venture for its producers, Sun Pictures, which has also bankrolled Jailer. Grieving the loss of his son and partly blaming himself for raising him to be honest and fearless, Muthuvel goes after Seenu and murders him, disposing the body by coercing a clueless local taxi driver Vimal into helping him. In retaliation, Varman's men attempt to kill Muthuvel's grandson Rithvik, but Muthuvel manages to save him. Muthuvel tries to convince Varman to leave him and his family alone, but to no avail. Enraged, he decides to fight back.

The warden of the jail, Muthuvel Pandian (Rajnikanth), foils the efforts by putting on a show for the remaining criminals. The plot of Jailer is around Tiger Muthuvel Pandian (Rajinikanth), an ex-prisoner who is out to exact revenge on a gang trading in ancient temple artefacts for the killing of his son, ACP Arjun (Vasanth Ravi). But he runs into a number of unforeseen issues that endanger his own family, including Vijaya (Ramya Krishnan), Shwetha (Mirnaa Menon), and granddaughter Rithvik. He receives assistance from old alleys, Mathew (Mohanlal), Narasimha (Shiva Rajkumar), and Jackie Shroff throughout the trek. Does he manage to protect his family and exact justice on his son? Everything happens in the jail.Muthuvel Pandian is a retired police officer who lives in Kodambakkam with his family. Muthuvel's son ACP Arjun is investigating Varman, an eccentric gangster operating from his base of operations in Arakkonam, who smuggles idols of gods and sells them to buyers overseas. Arjun confronts Varman's henchman Seenu and demands him about the whereabouts of Varman. While getting close to nabbing Varman, Arjun suddenly goes missing and the police department covers this up by spreading word that he may have committed suicide due to the stress of the job.
