Bored with her domestic, small-town existence, a woman travels to New Delhi to reunite with her rowdy group of high school friends. In Sukhee, directed by Sonal Joshi, a bunch of middle-aged men joke that there are just too many women empowerment films out there, and they all seem similar. Ironically, in the end, the joke is on the film, as Sukhee fails to help the cause of feminism due to the utter lack of freshness in the story. In its attempts to tell the story of a Punjabi homemaker (Shilpa Shetty in the titular role) yearning for respect and wanting a break from her mundane existence, Sukhee reminds you of several popular, well-made movies that deal with a familiar theme. However, Sukhee doesn’t have an edge, as it is neither on par with those films nor better than them.
Sukhee is a slice-of-life story, light-hearted comedy but deep down, it strikes an emotional chord. It makes you believe that there is a Sukhee in all of us. At the risk of being judged, I'd say that it's not easy for a lot of women to make the choice that Sukhee eventually makes, but in its own way, that's also a showcase of strength and courage. Sukhee is no Thappad, but it has its own way of telling how you can stand for your self-respect. It also has touches of English Vinglish, but never to a point that you start to draw similarities or compare.Set in a small town called Anandkot, Sukhpreet Kalra aka Sukhee (Shilpa) is a middle-class Punjabi housewife, living with her husband Guru (Chaitannya Choudhry), teenage daughter Jassi (Maahi Jain) and ailing father-in-law (Vinod Nagpal). In Sukhee's own words, 'meri zindagi bas subah ke chai aur raat ke doodh ke beech mein latak rahi hai'.
While the man of the house is struggling to make ends meet, daughter is doing head girl duties in school, back home, Sukhee is fed up with her mundane routine, and wishes to go to Delhi for a school reunion with her besties - 'Kuttiyon ka reunion' as their Whatapp group name reads.Sukhee feels promising until things get slapstick and off track. Expect pointless toilet humour and jokes that lack punch. The narrative shifts gear and loses your attention once the action moves to Delhi. Scenes and dialogues run in circles, and everyone keeps repeating things they have already said. “Sukhee naam wale kabhi dukhi nahi hotay” sounds good when you hear it once. Overkill is tiring. The girl gang track would’ve worked if other characters weren’t just Sukhee cheerleaders but individuals in their own right. None of the other girls (Kusha Kapila, Dilnaz Irani, Pavleen Gujral) have much to do, though all have a decent screen presence. Despite roping in a good actor, Amit Sadh love track is the film’s weakest portion.
It does not work at all and only drags the film endlessly. The film could’ve easily been 20 minutes shorter to work better.A light-hearted, slice-of-life story of Sukhpreet `Sukhee` Kalra, a 38-year- old Punjabi housewife who, fed up of her everyday, mundane life, goes to Delhi to attend her school reunion.Sukhee relives the 17-year-old version of herself whilst going through a plethora of experiences in a span of just seven days, coming out rekindled, reborn and making the most difficult transition in her life - from being a wife and a mother, to being a woman again.Fed up with her mundane existence, a housewife gets to relive the past while attending a school reunion. The plot revolves around Shilpa Shetty’s character, Sukhpreet (Sukhee), a 38-year-old woman tackling the challenges of a small-town life. Her family includes a grumpy husband, a teenage daughter, and an ailing father-in-law.
The lack of variety in Sukhee’s life takes an unexpected turn with the news of a high school reunion. When she comes across a video from her youth, she recalls her pledge to remain “always wild, never mild.” This triggers Sukhee’s desire to break free from her daily routine.Despite her husband’s disapproval, Sukhee heads to Delhi to meet with her old gang of friends—Meher, Mansi, and Tanvi. As she observes their successful and content lives, Sukhee realizes she has deep regret for the choices she has made. Thus, the school reunion becomes a pivotal event for her, which reflects the stark contrast between Sukhee’s past and present self.Sukhpreet (Shilpa Shetty) is a 38-year-old Punjabi housewife who gets to relive her life as a 17-year-old after attending her school reunion. Her experiences over the seven days reinvigorate her as a woman, after being restricted to the roles of a mother and a wife over the past many years.
