“Free Guy” is like a hyperactive puppy. It really wants to be your friend. It’s easy to like and fun to hang out with. It also has a habit of running around in circles, losing its focus, and shitting on the floor. A family action movie that targets the Fortnite Generation, "Free Guy" also preaches the importance of individuality while not only feeling like a dozen other movies but literally incorporating some of their imagery. An enjoyable cast, including movie-stealing work from Jodie Comer, holds it all together, but one can still see just enough glitches in this matrix to wish it was better.

The story of this movie is a pretty cool idea but unfortunately it is somewhat ruined by Disney’s woke brigade.I have to say that I quite enjoyed the first third of this movie even though said woke brigade managed to throw in some woke unnecessary bullshit about “white privilege” quite early but from there it went rather downhill.The first third had plenty of over the top hilarious action in it. It was fun to watch. The parts where Free Guy learns to “level up” and kick ass where quite cool.From there on it started to go downhill. The idea that Millie should access some “hidden level” in the game to reveal evidence that Antwan had stolen code from her is rather ludicrous.Speaking of Antwan, can you say “over the top”? Sometimes over the top can be fun but this guy was just cringey.

Free Guy tells the story of Guy (Ryan Reynolds), an NPC in an MMO video game called Free City who unexpectedly gains sentience and uses it to achieve his true potential. Aided by video game developer Keys (Joe Keery) and player character Millie (Jodie Comer), Guy helps to uncover Free City's source code in an attempt to prove that its developer (Taika Waititi) stole the code. With his best friend, NPC Buddy (Lil Rel Howery) at his side and armed with an array of video game weapons, Guy must face threats from both inside and outside of his virtual world.

Starring Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi.There’s no greater feeling to go on movie night with the set mentality of “Ok, just to pass the time, plus Jodie Comer is in it and she’s pretty hot…Ryan Reynolds as well”, and then come out knowing that this is among your top favorites of the year because you had such a wonderful time at the movie theater.Although some of the story elements have been used before, I still found the premise for Free Guy interesting. Ryan Reynolds‘ character, just named Guy, is a bank teller in Free City. What Guy doesn’t know is that his entire world is actually an open-world video game and that he’s just a regular NPC, that’s a non-player character in gamer talk. But then after meeting a girl, he starts deviating from his regular programming, becoming the hero of the story.

Only two and a half years ago did this sort of thing become the twist in the Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway noir film Serenity. I will admit it was kind of positively wacky finding out the lives of these characters were all fake and coded, but the wooden performances, perhaps even told to be in the form of NPCs, and not doing enough with said twist made the whole thing end with a big feeling of misjudgment. Free Guy takes itself less seriously and with more self-awareness, knowing we’re going to scratch our heads before we end up laughing ourselves silly as we see everyone non-reactive and seemingly in their own minds as explosions, gunfights and robberies take place from every corner.
