When brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jimmy (Demián Salomón) discover that a demonic infection has been festering in a nearby farmhouse -- its very proximity poisoning the local livestock -- they attempt to evict the victim from their land. Failing to adhere to the proper rites of exorcism, their reckless actions inadvertently trigger an epidemic of possessions across their rural community. Now they must outrun an encroaching evil as it corrupts and mutilates everyone it is exposed to, and enlist the aid of a wizened "cleaner," who holds the only tools that can stop this supernatural plague.The residents of a small rural town discover that a demon is about to be born among them. 

They desperately try to escape before the evil is born, but it may be too late.The most memorable aspects of Demian Rugna’s “When Evil Lurks,” which just had its world premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival, have an anarchic brutality that’s reminiscent of the work of an obvious influence in the Argentinian filmmaker, Lucio Fulci. This film doesn’t abide by many norms—dogs and children are not free or innocent, for the record—and gets great power from occasionally dropping into gory, gnarly insanity. It’s an admirably vicious piece of work when it wants to be—although arguably could have gone even further and more frequently.

 After all, once you open the door to Hell, viewers are willing to go with you wherever the journey leads. A rotten body infected with disease, exorcisms, demonic children and a deadly dog are some horror elements in Demian Rugna’s When Evil Lurks. For horror enthusiasts, it’s a mashup of every element. From the moment the movie opens with the infected body, it only worsens. No one is safe, and not two brothers attempting to escape the supernatural entities before they fall victim to it. Every stake is raised. Survival is the only thing on their minds, and they will do whatever it takes to keep their family safe.
