FELUDAR GOYENDAGIRI SEASON 1  (2021) : Srijit Mukherji’s interpretation of the iconic Feluda is not something that’s a recent obsession, but one which was first adapted for the stage, and then for the big screen by the director. As a storyteller, Ray’s visions were often accompanied by hand-drawn pictures to ignite the imagination of young readers. This is where perhaps the filmmaker part of the writer comes across, especially in creating characters that look a certain way. Jatayu, aka, Lalmohan Ganguly, initially, had a different look, but after casting Santosh Dutta, Ray did take a certain liking to that look. Staying true to these pictures, Srijit puts them as reference points often in this series, looking for validation, perhaps. It makes this Feluda story, perhaps not one of the best by Ray, toned and stretched across episodes that meander on the same path initially taken in the tale, with sharp detours that may not be relevant, and, to some, disturbing, since it takes an otherwise children’s story and makes it more mature.

Given that, the main cast returns, with Tota Roy Choudhury as Prodosh Chandra Mitra or Feluda, Kalpan Mitra as Topshe, and Anirban Chakraborty as Jatayu, with some welcome additions. Barun Chanda plays the suave Birupakkho Majumdar, a character that he pulls off stylishly, with the right amount of confusion and conviction in his eyes for the audience to be drawn in. Rahul Banerjee as Pulak Ghoshal is apt casting, offering his own brand of hilarity, and given that in the book Pulak Ghoshal is a few years younger than Jatayu, he adds a fun element, especially in his asides. Saheb Bhattacharya as Rajen Raina is a bit too stiff and young to play this part, though the initial choice might have been because the flashback scenes with his youthful face, but overall doesn’t have the presence to steal the show.

There are, of course, several departures from the story, but Anirban Chakraborty steals the show often, where his foibles are met with a lot of hilarity and Mukherji’s attention to detail makes the cigar-smoking scene(s) a great comic relief in the otherwise slow-paced narrative.

One thing that has to be mentioned here is the narrative itself. It is not a fast-paced romp as one may be used to receiving from Mukherji. However, the restrain is required to stretch out the story over several episodes, which is perhaps a problem for anyone who expects a faster pace. The vintage colour scheme, enhanced and focussed on shades of sepia, blurred backgrounds to minimize signs of the present, advertisements from the 80s placed deliberately to add to the ‘feel’, with the Bengali nostalgia about Darjeeling heightened by shots of the Mall and other main roads that are as familiar as they are comforting. The theme, with Srijato’s lyrics, is based on the Sonar Kella theme, and catches attention in a good way.

Tota Roy Chowdhury resumes his role as Feluda but the use of the sepia tint (a bit too much at times) renders his skin sallow and his expressions far less impactful than they should be. Kalpan Mitra as Topshe is stuck with a hairstyle straight out of the 1940s, but the shine in his eyes and his overall demeanour creates a neutral space between the other two that is much required at times. Anirban Chakraborty’s Jatayu has a lot to do in this story, and in the detailed scenes incidents mentioned in passing in the main narrative his comic timing is perfect.
