TRIANGLE is a 2009 psychological thriller movie directed by Christopher Smith. The film stars Melissa George, Liam Hemsworth, Emma Lung, Michael Dorman, and Rachael Carpani. The movie follows the story of a group of friends who go on a sailing trip but end up in a mysterious Bermuda Triangle-like situation that causes them to confront their deepest fears.
The movie opens with Jess (Melissa George) preparing to go on a sailing trip with her friend Greg (Michael Dorman) and a group of his friends. Jess has a young son named Tommy, whom she leaves in the care of her friend Sally (Rachael Carpani) for the duration of the trip.
The group sets sail on a yacht called the "Triangle" and everything seems to be going well until they encounter a sudden storm that damages the boat. While trying to navigate their way through the storm, they come across a deserted ocean liner named the Aeolus. The group boards the Aeolus hoping to find help, but things start to get strange as they explore the ship.
As the group splits up to search for supplies, Jess becomes separated from the others and starts to experience strange events. She hears a strange noise and sees a figure moving in the shadows. She becomes increasingly paranoid as she tries to find her way back to the others. When she finally reunites with the group, they realize that their situation is much more dire than they initially thought.
The group tries to leave the Aeolus but find that they are trapped on the ship. They discover that time is repeating itself and that they are stuck in a time loop. Each time the group attempts to leave the ship, they end up back on the Aeolus. They begin to realize that they are not alone on the ship and that something sinister is at play.
As the group continues to search for a way out, they start to uncover the truth behind their situation. They discover that the Aeolus was a research vessel that was experimenting with time travel. The experiments went awry, causing the ship to become trapped in a time loop.
As the group tries to figure out how to break the time loop, they are confronted by their deepest fears. Jess is haunted by the memory of her son Tommy, who drowned in a pool. Greg is revealed to be a criminal who has been using the sailing trip to smuggle drugs. Sally is pregnant with Greg's child and is terrified of what will happen if he finds out.
The group's fears become more intense as the time loop continues. They start to turn on each other, suspecting that one of them is responsible for their situation. Jess begins to realize that she is the key to breaking the time loop and saving the group.
In a climactic scene, Jess discovers that she is not the only one on the ship who is aware of the time loop. Another version of herself, from a previous time loop, appears and tells her that she needs to sacrifice one of the group in order to break the loop. Jess is horrified by the idea but realizes that it is the only way to save the rest of the group.
Jess decides to sacrifice herself, believing that her death will break the time loop and free the rest of the group. She reveals to the others what needs to be done and they are initially resistant, but eventually agree to help her.
In a dramatic scene, Jess is killed by one of the group and the time loop is broken. The group wakes up on the beach where they originally set sail from, unsure of what just happened. They are relieved to be back in the real world and go their separate ways.
The movie ends with a shot of Jess's dead body on the Aeolus, implying that the group may not have escaped the time loop after all.
