Time moves in one direction, memory in another. What happens when the natural synchronisation between the two starts to crumble? Filmmaker Avinash Arun’s contemplative film captures the disturbing stillness before the seismic waves of dementia dismantle the past of Shailaja (Shefali Shah) — a memory she treasures, a painful episode that she has locked in a vault. She is at a stage of life where marriage becomes a chore like breathing. Having worked in the divorce department of a family court in Mumbai, Shailaja knows how the nuts and bolts of a relationship wear down over time like the zestless but efficient Mumbai Local.

Set in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, this relationship drama focuses on Shefali’s character Shailija, who is a government employee diagnosed with early-stage dementia and is aware she will lose her memory soon. She therefore embarks on a short holiday to Vengurla with her husband Dipankar Desai (essayed by Swanand Kirkire), in order to reconnect with her now-married school sweetheart Pradeep Kamat, portrayed by Jaideep Ahlawat.Year end lists are difficult, but they serve as a careful and necessary reminder of the films that surrounded us in the last few months. Some films demand our attention for their own merit, while the rest are merely employing tricks to hold it a bit longer. From promotions, talk shows, interviews- the buzz is indicative of the pull that one film has. With so many feature films releasing in multiple languages, in theatres as well as in OTT, the options have only grown with these years. Its hard to keep track, harder to notice that one title holding onto a late spot in the cinemas for the second week, pushed aside because a big release which lies ahead. As the year draws in to a close, here's a look at some of the finest Indian films that released this year which you probably missed.

He never left his hometown, and their incomplete love story reminds her how she had vanished abruptly due to a personal tragedy 28 years ago. She owes him an explanation and a closure for herself. Joining Shailaja and Pradeep on this tragedy-stricken last dance are their respective spouses. Shailaja is married to an insurance agent Dipankar (Swanand Kirkire) and Pradeep to a very understanding Sarika (Kadambari Kadam).Director Avinash Arun, known for the much-acclaimed Marathi film ‘Killa’ and series like Paatal Lok and School of Lies, explores memories and the alchemy of time in this self-reflective film. We boast about being busy and having no time for things that we like until there’s no privilege of ‘later’. The attempt to find solace in the stillness of the present instead of anticipating the future or dissecting the past, is moving. However, the film doesn’t quite come together despite compelling performances by Shefali and Jaideep. Some moments tug at your heartstrings but for the major part, the scenes feel stagnant and detached to each other.

Shefali speaks through her eyes and silences. Her trauma and fear of losing her identity and memories erupt quietly without making a noise. The climax shot in a ferris wheel is most effective in an otherwise meandering plot.The screenplay, by Dhaware, Omkar Barve and Arpita Chatterjee, keeps sentimentality firmly at bay, but can’t avoid banality from registering its presence. Pradeep’s regret over losing Shailaja doesn’t ring as true as his equation with his feisty wife Sarika (Kadambari Kadam). Although solidly played by Ahlawat, Pradeep – an amateur poet who writes in Hindi and has a distinctly north Indian manner – sticks out in this Marathi corner of Maharashtra.The Konkan setting, beautifully lensed by Dhaware, serves largely as window dressing for a movie with bare shelves where meaty scenes needed to have been. A segue into local folklore about water spirits is neither here nor there.Three Of Us is directed by Avinash Arun, written by Omkar Achyut Barve, Arpita Chatterjee, Varun Grover, Shoaib Nazeer, and Avinash Arun, and produced by Sarita Patel, Sanjay Routray, and Bunny Vasu. Shailaja struggled with conducting her day-to-day activities. 

She maintained a small diary and checked her to-do list. She always seemed to be lost in thought and struggled to cope with her routine. We can assume that she decided to quit her job due to her absent-mindedness. Shailaja worked at the divorce division, and over the years, she watched several couples enter the room, wanting to separate. Shailaja believed she had very little role to play in the decision the couple took because, most of the time, they were confident about the outcome. She believed people made their minds up about their relationships way before they filed for divorce. The time taken in between is for them to familiarize themselves with the permanence of separation.

Bryan has a one-night stand with Efe when he goes on a business trip, and leaves the next day without a word. Things get complicated when, months later, Efe shows up in his home, and his fiancée mistakes her for his sister who she has never met.When Three of Us opens, we don’t immediately know that Shailaja has dementia. She marks a to-do list, like any prudent homemaker would do. An awkward office farewell doesn’t seem like there is more to read into it. In a scene, her husband Dipankar (lyricist Swanand Kirkire), with a muted expression, tells her she forgot to add salt to a dish.Initially, it feels like a mere chauvinist act, but all these moments get an additional layer of sorrowful meaning once we are privy to Shailaja’s condition. How everything she does is an act of holding on to a world, slipping from the clenches of her memory like sand between fingers.
