The film is set in the fictional town of Balrampur where Vedvyas Tripathi (Vicky Kaushal) better known as Bhajan Kumar lives with his family headed by his father Pandit Siyaram Tripathi (Kumud Mishra). Bhajan Kumar’s life with his family was going well till a question on his identity arises that throws the city in a flurry of rumour and apprehension. Will he survive or fall prey to this onslaught?Pandit Siyaram Tripathi (Kumud) is a revered priest whose family conducts all the religious ceremonies in Balrampur. The town and Tripathi household’s star is their son, Ved Vyas Tripathi (Vicky Kaushal), aka Billu, also fondly called Bhajan Kumar for his famed bhajan performances. When Siyaram Tripathi goes for a teerth yatra, the family receives a letter informing them that Ved is a Muslim by birth. As Ved questions his identity, his begrudged friend and the Tripathis' rival Pandit, Mishra (plot to use this to bring him and his family down. While the Tripathis risk losing a prestigious and hefty marriage contract to Mishra, it remains to be seen whether Pandit Siyaram will accept his son and if Billu will be accepted by their fervently religious mohalla.

 

 

The movie aims to deliver the message of unity between two religions but lacks conviction and rationale. The basic premise of the story by Vijay Krishna Acharya, also the film’s director, is Billu discovering his religion (by birth) through a dubious letter, which the family dismisses as a prank. However, Billu instantly accepts it as a truth. The plot turns into a soap opera, with the bad guys editing images and videos to make Billu infamous on social media and demanding a DNA test to prove he is Pandit Siyaram’s son.The Great Indian Family review: Vicky Kaushal stars in this family comedy about a man raised by Hindus who learns he might actually be Muslim.

Whenever there is a conflict or difference of opinion within the members of the Tripathi family, they opt for a democratic solution where everyone votes, and arrive at a decision that others happily, or unhappily, accept. This forms the very first pillar of The Great Indian Family (TGIF). Then comes diversity, and director Vijay Krishna Acharya, in an attempt to send across a message of oneness, harmony and unity in diversity, unknowingly enters the preachy zone. He ends up serving us a cliched social commentary on Hindu-Muslim divide. And what's a family comedy without drama, that's the last and final pillar of TGIF. And be it performances or the dialogues, the film is dramatic to a point that it loses track in more places than one.

 

 

More than six decades after director Yash Chopra emphasised the value of Indian DNA in Dhool Ka Phool (1959) and Dharmputra (1961), with the song ‘Tu Hindu Banega Na Musalman Banega, Insan Ki Aulad Hai Insan Banega’ addressing the growing religious bigotry in the aftermath of Partition, Yash Raj banner has recycled the unity in diversity theory for a new generation of audience that is faced with similar threats to the composite fabric.Infused with humor, drama, and intense emotions, the plot unfolds in the small town of Balrampur. The story revolves around the Tripathi family which has a distinguished reputation as the leading priestly lineage in town. The Tripathi household’s star is their son Bhajan Kumar aka Ved Vyas Tripathi who not only croons bhajans but also indulges in fun moments with friends. However, an unexpected twist of fate leads causes the actual details of his birth and lineage to surface. Can Ved can resolve the biggest confusion of his life?
