Liam Neeson stars in Retribution, an immersive ticking clock thriller that straps audiences in for a high-octane ride of redemption and revenge. When a mysterious caller puts a bomb under his car seat, Matt Turner (Neeson) begins a high-speed chase across the city to complete a specific series of tasks. With his kids trapped in the back seat and a bomb that will explode if they get out of the car, a normal commute becomes a twisted game of life or death as Matt follows the stranger's increasingly dangerous instructions in a race against time to save his family.For the last decade or so, Liam Neeson has been cranking out largely generic programmers that have no real reason to exist other than the hope that one might turn out to be another “Taken,” the 2008 thriller that became a massive worldwide hit and unexpectedly reinvented him as an action hero. I doubt I could name half of them without looking up Neeson’s IMDb—then again, I suspect the same goes for him.

However, the release earlier this year of Neil Jordan's “Marlowe,” in which he portrayed the legendary detective character Philip Marlowe, suggested Neeson was just as tired with a current filmography comparable to Charles Bronson’s in the '80s and wanted to do something different—even if the results did not work, Neeson was trying to do something worthy of his genuine talents. With his latest project, “Retribution,” whatever flickers of effort were on display in “Marlowe” have been ruthlessly snuffed out. Here is a film so devoid of thrills, excitement, or purpose that it seems to have been custom-made to play in empty multiplexes during the traditionally dead last weeks of summer.

With Matt's kids trapped in the back seat and a bomb that will explode if they get out of the car, a normal commute becomes a twisted game of life or death as Matt follows the stranger's increasingly dangerous instructions in a race against time to save his family.Being forced to try to bring freshness to the same tired ideas over and over to get some studio work must be frustrating. I would be picketing Lionsgate (which is behind this movie) just because it’s really not easy making this kind of thing original. The latest ripoff — and it literally is because it comes from the 2015 Spanish film El Desconocido, which itself has been remade more than once in the past few years — is the Liam Neeson-starring Retribution. A better title might be Generic Neeson #9. I even looked up the title on IMDb just to make sure this was a new Neeson movie.A man and his two children are trapped in a car rigged with a bomb. That's the simple and frightening premise of Retribution, a movie that clearly doesn't know what to do with its promising setup.

The movie is the third remake, following South Korean and German versions, of a 2015 Spanish movie. Since none of the previous iterations has had an official release in the United States, it's difficult to tell if the problems of this version are inherent to the material or unique to screenwriter Christopher Salmanpour and director Nimród Antal's adaptation. That's somewhat helpful, at least, because we can just treat this movie as its own entity, without any ability to offer or need for comparison. On the other hand, the lingering question of how this remake compares to the original or its subsequent adaptations might be more intriguing than most of what happens after a certain point in this story.It follows Matt Turner, who's played by Liam Neeson in a role that might announce that, while filmmakers aren't finished with his most recent career shift toward becoming an action star, he might be. His character spends the majority of this plot planted to the driver's seat of a fancy SUV, and even though an introductory scene shows that Matt is competent as a fighter, he doesn't need those abilities at any point in the story.That means we get to see Neeson give an actual performance without too many distractions for the first two acts of this tale, set in Berlin and relying on the tension of the pressure cooker of the setup. Matt is a banker or some financial guru with a particular set of skills—namely getting clients to invest in questionable deals devised by his fellow executives at the firm for which he works.

Of course, Matt (Liam Neeson) had forgotten that he had to take the kids to school today. But the small argument with his wife Heather (Embeth Davidtz) quickly turns into a big nightmare. The investment banker is barely in the car with Emily (Lilly Aspell) and Zach (Jack Champion) when a stranger calls. The caller claims that there is a bomb hidden in Matt's car. If even one passenger gets out, everyone will die. Matt is seized by panic. Who is the stranger? What does he want? Is the threat real? As Matt drives through a peaceful Berlin with his kids, his nerves become more and more frayed. Many millions are at stake - and a dirty secret...
