Brace yourselves as we present to you India`s first-ever Bio-science film, The Vaccine War - A True Story.

The Covid-19 outbreak will always be a dark chapter in human history. Many of us lost a loved one or someone we knew of and we’ve never felt more helpless. The film can be triggering especially for those who encountered a personal loss during the pandemic.

The story follows the step-by-step making of Covaxin that was developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with ICMR and ‎National Institute of Virology (NIV). Through an arduous runtime of 2 hours, 40 minutes, the medical drama revisits the events that unravelled in India following the outbreak of coronavirus in Wuhan, China. It also doubles up as a preachy rebuttal, countering the massive flak faced by the central government for its reported poor handling of the pandemic that took human lives in large numbers.

‘The Vaccine War’ can be broken into two tales. The first half tries to understand the lives of scientists and give their voice a platform. The latter desperately works as a government mouthpiece intended to whitewash allegations. The film soars in the first half and crashes in the second, as it undoes its sincerity and human emotion.

Projecting media as malicious and hinting that they are the real virus which need to be shut down, is the film’s weakest link. ‘This is not a bio war, this is an info war’, we are told. The narrative that media is a puppet of ‘foreign powers’ as they fund it, sounds like an unverified what’s app forward.

A timely celebration of Indian scientists’ efforts to create an indigenous vaccine against COVID-19, The Vaccine War turns out to be a fulminating rant against the critics of the present dispensation who raised the speed vs. efficacy issue at the time of vaccine development and often question the government’s commitment to science.

 

Based on Going Viral, Dr. Balram Bhargava’s lucid account of the making of Covaxin, director Vivek Agnihotri efficiently dramatises the commitment and courage of the former director of the Indian Council of Medical Research and his dedicated team of scientists drawn from the ICMR and the National Institute of Virology.

From questioning China and the World Health Organisation’s ambivalence in not revealing the source of the virus to big pharma trying to hamstring the Indian government’s efforts to be self-reliant in vaccine manufacturing, the film is dotted with conspiracy theories but in its effort to find an antagonist in a real story, Agnihotri crafts a cardboard villain in the form of Rohini Singh Dhulia (Raima Sen), a science editor who deliberately wants to create doubts around the Indian vaccine to bring the government down with the help of a toolkit provided by her foreign sponsors. Placed more as a metaphorical punching bag in the narrative to be pummelled with labels like ‘terrorist’ and ‘swine’, the harangue against Rohini makes the film increasingly sound like it is part of a toolkit to keep critics of the government in check.

'The Vaccine War' talks about the struggle of Indian scientists behind the development of vaccines and also unfolds many stories that went behind the curtains. The film stars Nana Patekar, Pallavi Joshi, Sapthami Gowda, Nivedita Bhattacharya, Girija Oak and Raima Sen in key roles.

The Vivek Agnihotri- directorial opened in theatres on September 28 with just Rs 1.3 crore. It was released alongside 'Fukrey 3' and Kangana Ranaut's 'Chandramukhi 2'. 'The Vaccine War' saw another drop on Thursday, October 5, and minted just Rs 47 lakh. Hence, the total collection of the film now stands at Rs 8.59 crore. Meanwhile, 'The Vaccine War' had an overall 10.75 per cent occupancy on October 5 in the Hindi belt.
Recently, Vivek claimed that The Vaccine War will "expose the usual suspects" who tried to sabotage the development of an indigenous vaccine during the Covid-19 pandemic for their political agenda. The film, according to the director, is India's "first ever bio-science" movie. It is based on the true story of Indian scientists in their fight against Covid-19 by developing an affordable vaccine for India and the world, he added.
