Paro (Mrunal Thakur) and Rohit Patel (Abhimanyu Dassani) cross paths with each other while holidaying in Switzerland, with the former falling head over heels in love with the male protagonist. However, they don’t get a chance to interact there, and life moves on for the duo. Upon returning to India, Paro’s father Navjot (Paresh Rawal) and brothers Yuvraj (Sharman Joshi) and Bhajji (Abhishek Banerjee) scout for a suitable match for Paro, and as destiny had it, they chance upon Rohit. However, they collectively decide to hide about Paro’s night blindness from him and his family, which leads to a series of crazy situations. What happens after, and do Paro and Rohit ultimately tie the knot is for you to see in Aankh Micholi.
Comedy of Errors is a genre that Hindi cinema has aced for decades now. Be it the original ‘Golmaal’ or Rohit Shetty’s take on it, or ‘Dhamaal’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and Hungama,’ the list is endless. Not all of these films aged well, but the performances, the execution and the comic timing land even today. ‘Aankh Micholi’ tries to bring back this flavour but without a disclaimer.Aankh Micholi is a 2023 Indian comedy film that attempts to tickle your funny bone but, unfortunately, ends up tickling the wrong places. The film introduces us to the Singh family from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, a quirky bunch with a penchant for peculiar medical conditions. We've got the forgetful homoeopathic.... er, Ayurvedic, doctor, Navjot Singh (Paresh Rawal), his deaf elder son, Yuvraj Singh (Sharman Joshi), the stammering second son, Harbhajan Singh (Abhishek Banerjee), and the daughter, Paro (Mrunal Thakur), who is suffering from night blindness. It's a family that could easily give the Addams Family a run for their money.
Aankh Micholi, a comedy of errors by OMG! director Umesh Shukla, can best be described as a WTH film, Where’s the humour? With a plotline as thin as an impromptu comic sketch, even the clownings of slapstick regulars like Paresh Rawal, Sharman Joshi, and Abhishek Banerjee feels like a victim to forceful tickling. It involves a lot of people uttering absurd lies, then giving absurd explanations to cover up for those lies, then smiling sheepishly and laughing awkwardly, hoping the audience might join in.The film opens in Switzerland where Paro Singh (Mrunal Thakur), like a typical Yash Chopra heroine, is praying for a suitable boy in a church, since a gurudwara wasn’t around (I would have won a bet with myself if she had opened the prayer with “God ji”). After a bizarre scene, which involves a Charlie Chaplin cosplayer running away with her phone, Paro spots mystery hunk Rohit Patel (Abhimanyu Dasani). A song sequence which feels like an advertisement for a clothing brand follows. It’s love at first sight for Paro but there is a hiccup.
She has night blindness.Back home in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur, her family too has their own share of ailments. Father Navjot (Paresh Rawal) suffers from fixation amnesia, popularly known as short-term memory loss (Thanks Ghajini), while brothers Yuvraj (Sharman Joshi) and Harbhajan (Abhishek Banerjee) can’t hear and stutter, respectively. Needless to say, these disabilities are continuously exploited for cheap laughs. Paro also has a sister-in-law Billo (Divya Dutta), who, in dearth of an impairment, combines two idioms together to mostly nonsensical rather than comical results. Something like “biting a bullet is no rocket science”.
