Lauding Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, KJo revealed that he saw Ranbir Kapoor's movie twice. Karan Johar said, “This is not an average thinking mind. This is the mind of someone so distinct, so individualistic that I was blown away. I saw the film twice, first to see it as an audience member and second to study it. I think the success, and acceptance of Animal is game-changing. It's going to bring in a tone and syntax which doesn't exist. The construct of a scene…Like what I love about Sandeep, even in Kabir Singh and Arjun Reddy. I love that he has a popular song, he plays it then he stops it whenever he wants to. Before the refrain comes out, he stops it, he starts it when he wants to, and he cuts the scene how he has to. It is like he is telling a story with such conviction and that's the conviction is something that I want to have.”

Animal eventually spends almost an hour in flashback to thread the needle of these developments, and this topsy-turvy structure isn’t entirely untoward. It reinforces the idea that these physical changes are largely cosmetic, and the man Vijay happens to be underneath is hardly any different. It also allows the buildup to an excessive crescendo, involving a pulsating electronic score, hordes of henchmen in skull and animal masks, a chopper motorbike that isn’t so much “fitted with three machine gun turrets” as it is three machine-gun turrets, and the aforementioned Sikh support crew belting out a victory ballad as Vijay engages in a bloody, close-quarters ax fight. This last bit is the closest thing Animal has to a musical number.

The film and its title were officially announced in January 2021. Principal photography commenced in April 2022, with Amit Roy handling the cinematography, and wrapped by April 2023. Animal has music composed by JAM8, Vishal Mishra, Jaani, Manan Bhardwaj, Shreyas Puranik, Ashim Kemson and Harshwardhan Rameshwar. With a runtime of 201 minutes, Animal is one of the longest Indian films ever made. It was initially set for an August 2023 release but was postponed due to post-production work.In a post-credits scene, Aziz Haque, a butcher in Istanbul and the youngest of the Haque brothers, undergoes plastic surgery to resemble Vijay. Zoya is with him and revealed to be pregnant, though unsure whether the child's father is Aziz or Vijay. Aziz sets out with Abid to exact retaliation for the deaths of their two elder brothers.
